BSC'S HISTORY: A PROFESSIONAL CALLING

Baleine Sous Caillou Productions (BSC Productions) was founded in 1996, when an international set of individuals came together because they believed they could use the audio-visual medium to make a difference.

"We kicked off our collaboration with documentary films, " explains Shayne Hughes. "Our profound interest in contributing to the evolution of the human psyche, and human behaviors, and our passion for audiovisuals, led us to make movies on dialogue, conflict resolution and mental models."

The experience rapidly compelled us to create our own structure: hence Baleine Sous Caillou Productions was born. "We cherish our independence. So we acquired our own shooting and editing material, and kept other jobs in the film industry to maintain the freedom to choose our projects out of interest rather than out of financial obligation," emphasizes Mathieu Duboscq.

Our approach remained independent, even when we tackled institutional film projects. Rather than promoting only certain products or companies, it was important for us to preserve a sense of purpose in our projects and to convey a piece of humanity. "When a lenses distributor approached us to make a movie about their products, we came back to them with a proposal that combined their needs and our principles," insists Carole Levy. "We journeyed through France to interview the opticians on-site. We knew that it was the only way to create the trust and comfort needed for them to speak freely about their profession. We discovered first-hand how the product in question - with its strengths and even its occasional weaknesses - helped them to accomplish their job with passion!" Carole concludes, "I believe that one of our strengths as a team is our ability to reveal an authenticity - a "flame" - within people. This same strength is also our personal reward. Under these conditions, we love doing institutional films".

First and foremost, however, we created BSC to produce fiction. Each team member had a long-standing desire to do fiction films. For some, like Noah Nuer, the desire stemmed from a childhood passion. "I have always been fascinated by movies and fiction, probably because I was more "visual" than "verbal" as a child - I was literally overflowing with imagination! Moreover, I have a personal belief that movies are a powerful means to make us reflect on our lives, our behaviors, and our preconceived ideas. Unfortunately, these subjects are too often limited to "intellectual" films, and rarely accessible to larger audiences. The challenge that truly motivates me and the team is to create films that both provide this depth and touch a large audience. Easier said than done."

"All these comments are very serious but our modus operandi is also simply to have fun!" reminds Guillaume Moreels. "We truly enjoy making our projects and I think that you can feel that in our movies, whether our aim is to stimulate the audience, or entertain them - or both. It is important that it be not just a job but also a passion. Our styles - and even our sensitivities - can be radically different at times, but our interactions are always a great source of stimulation and motivation."

Today, Baleine Sous Caillou has the ability to tackle not only all the different categories of audiovisuals (including documentaries, short films, clips, ads and more) - but since 2000, BSC also produces full-length films. Its first production "Get A Way" ("Cavalcades" in French) has received significant critical acclaim.

In conclusion, BSC's principles are both the "engine" of the company, and the source of the shareholders' satisfaction. "Today when I see our productions again, I am still proud of our choices and their results. It is important to look at what we have done and be able to say that it was worth investing so much energy!" concludes Monera Benbara, the current managing director.
